Do Link Injection Techniques Help With Search Engine Ranking?

I’ve discovered an Alexa top 2000, PR8 (front page) e-commerce site that is vulnerable to search box link injection techniques. Do these techniques still carry any weight with search engines, or have their algorithms completely discounted, if not punished, them?
